State:
Texas

Motorcycle Road Length: 155 Miles
Highway 335 ... often called "The Roller Coaster"
Motorcycle
Road Scenery:
A
ride through this part of Texas will most certainly change
your view of my beloved state. You will ride amongst scenery
as good as it gets, along clear rivers, through very twisty
mountain type curves amidst real Texas Ranches. With million
dollar vistas and cool clear waters along with friendly
folks and knowing that you are riding the best this large
state can offer, makes for great riding...
Nueces River (pronounced New-Aces) on Ranch Rd 335
Motorcycle
Road Quality:
This
route is mainly very twisty passing over large hills and
between not many gas stations. This roller coaster ride
will no doubt blow you away. The road is not heavily traveled,
but beware as sharp turns have certainly taken many motorcyclist
down. Also, although the surface is mostly in very good
condition, always watch for loose gravel, deer and slow
moving locals heading back to their ranch ... often a much
slower pace than we're zippin by at.
Frio River just outside Leaky, (pronounced lay-key) on Ranch Road 337.

Huge ranch just north of Campwood on Ranch Road 335(contributed

Photo contributed by visitor in Mar 10 :"I was up visiting the girls yesterday and got another shot if you want to include it. I only had time to do the "Roller Coaster" Portion on Ranch Road 335. The shot is of a stagnant pool that is an offshoot of the Nueces River."
Motorcycle
Roadside Amenities:
This
route isn't going to be know for its "Roadside Amenities"
as much as it is known for its scenery and road quality.
There are some very nice pull-outs, stop and enjoy the long
vistas. Gas up in Leakey as there are not too many gas stations
to choose from and where there is a very good motorcycle
shop. For a refreshing summertime swimming hole try the
Frio River (frio meaning cold!!!).
Note
from a recent MotorcycleRoads.com visitor about this route:
"Hwy 16 between Kerrville and Bandera is not for beginners!
Due to recent accidents, weekend police patrol has increased
a great deal. Hwy 173 may be a better route between Kerrville
& Bandera."
From
Kerrville,
heading south on Texas 16. At Medina you'll need to catch
RR337 heading west (right). Take RR337 west until you come
up on the town of Leakey. At Leakey, go north on US 83 for
a just about a mile and look for RR336 on the left. Take
a left onto RR336 which will head you north. Continue north
on RR336 until you meet Texas 41 and at this point you will
want to turn left in order to head west. Go west for 15
miles or so and you will find RR335 on the left. Take a
left (east) and get on RR335 and drive south down to Camp Wood where you can take a left on to RR337 and finish out the loop when you hit Leakey again.

Hello riders,
My wife and I have been eagerly waiting for our trip thru the Three Sisters route. We will be riding on it on Oct 12th. Looking forward to it big time. I'll let you all know how it went and if possible, I'll add pictures and maybe even a video.

Danny and I rode the 3 sisters for his 65th birthday today, Memorial Day!!! It was gorgeous and fun!! Fuel up in Leaky, on 41 just east of RR336, or possibly in CampWood. My new Harley Softail Classic with its stage 1 performance upgrade was a wonder. I have been riding for 2 years and rode the sisters hard today. I advise you to carry lots of water if you ride during our hot season.

Me and the wife started at Fredericksburg Labor day weekend 2009. Rode three sisters on Friday. The scenery was absolutly beautiful. Steep hills and sharp turns were abundant. I've Lived in Texas for 50 years and never knew how beautiful the hill country could be. When going from Fredericksburg it's a full days ride. Can't wait to go back!!!

Been there, rode that! The three sisters rocks!! I've been riding for just a few years and once I got down here and took this trip, I finally knew experienced what 2 wheels and a great motorcycle road can do - riding bliss! Best ride in Texas hands down and one of the best in the entire US.
This ride is on my top five for Tx. But since I'm coming from Houston, I don't think I'm going to waste my time on 41 or 336 next time - just up and down 335 and 337. 336 is simply a death wish since cattle and deer freely meander accross it not to mention those damn cattle guards.
I am not a motorcyclist. I drive a BMW 335i and drove down last New Years eve from DFW area to drive RR335. Just wanted to say I respect that bikers will be on this road but if you see a car, please understand this road is great for us automobilists too.
Just returned from riding the three sisters May 8th, 2009 on a Valkyrie. Loved the ride. There were three of us. The weather was perfect. Rodes are great and well paved. Definitely plan to ride this route again.
Great Route... Of course you need to be very careful... if you go down, either you die by going over a cliff or by hitting the memorial white cross from someone else who has died there before... not some roads for novices...

Rode The Three Sisters 09/06/09 on my 1981 Gl500I along with my brother and his Kawasaki 1500. We had a blast! What a great run. We didn't know Texas had it in her. We rode up from San Antonio on the advice of some bikers we'd met in Bandera earlier in the day and just thought we'd check it out. I've been riding for years and my brother just started. I'm used to riding in N.C. Va. and Oh. and haven't seen anything better. Novices beware! Them speed limit signs are for you.
Rode the 3 sisters Friday and Saturday October 17th and 18th 2008. What a great ride, the scenery is fantastic. The cattle guards do take away from the ride but not bad. Just slow down a little. Do be careful in the twisties. Our ride captain went down on Saturday. He came over the top of one of the hills to find the road made a sharp right turn. He went off the road and crashed. He will be ok, broken femur and a bruised ego. So be careful and enjoy what I think is the best riding in Tx.

I was introduced to the "Three Twisted Sisters" by my Goldwing Club in 1995. Have ridden them every year since. My favorite is the roller coaster section of 335 heading from south to north. Also better views of the river and the canyon when going north. Great road, great views and Spring is the time to go when the wildflowers are out. Will be taking a group up there in April for our annual visit. When you're done riding the Sisters and you want to unwind, head south of Leakey and take 1050 over to Hwy. 16. Nice sweepers and nice views for a laid back ride. Enjoy them all.

Did this route Saturday (July 31, 2010) with my son and four other riders. We trekked down from Killeen/Fort Hood and hit the Sister about 3:00, in the blazing heat, and had the time of our lives! My son is going to have a great story with which to begin his Senior year of high school back in Ohio!

I rode this recently, and I must say... WOW. That was one of the best routes I have been on so far.
Also, don't pass up 336! That was one of the funnest sections of twisties. I didn't see any deer nor cows that day, there are only a few cattle guards, and they were very smooth and mainly on straight sections of the road. 336 was also very good pavement.
If you have never been on those roads before, take it easy the first time, and you will have a blast!

The Three Sisters are a great ride, but ya need to know your limitations. Lots of chances to ruin your whole day. I've ridden the roads in North Georga, Tennesse, & North and South Carolina. Those roads are great too, but they always have a bunch of car traffic. The Sisters are pretty near deserted. I live very close, so I get to ride these roads every weekend. Ya gotta ride "The Twisted Sisters", at least once.

Northern section of 335 is an unbelievable roller coaster ride! The roads were well maintained and no gravel. The Three Twisted Sisters are the best roads in Texas!
