Photo contributed Jan 10: "This is the "GranJean" area, west of Stanley on Highway 21 - taken from a roadside pullout."
Motorcycle
Road Scenery:
Follow
right on the edge of the twisting Salmon River (HWY 75)
in central Idaho from the top of the Sawtooth Mtns to the
desert! This is a great route in one of the deepest canyons
in the US. You are not riding at elevation like the Beartooth.
You are at the bottom, right beside the river, and the curves
and drop offs are endless. Just a great enjoyable ride!
Motorcycle
Road Quality:
The
road is in good shape with endless curves.
Motorcycle
Roadside Amenities:
Fairly
quiet road when i was on it. Lots of scenery changes, from
the green lush high elevations down to the desert! White
water rafting is popular on this river and you will be passing
them all day! Lots of campgrounds near the top and a dip
in the river to cool down is possible just about anywhere
you want to pull over.
Directions:
You
can start from Stanley
(ID) and take 75 east about 50 miles to Challis, ID.
Here you will find US 93 and want to take that north another
60 or so miles and you'll role right in to Salmon. Be
aware that the ride from the south or the west to Stanley
is a great ride also. I rode up from the south from
Ketchum and while not hair raising, it was a great ride,
a few mountain pass's to cross and a twisty road. But
the road from the west (hwy 21) sounds awesome based on
the bikers I talked to in Stanley (check
out Boise to Twin Falls - Mountain Peaks to Lava Fields
Tour).

2009 my wife and rode hwy 93 all the way from the Canadian border to Stanley. This is a great ride. Make sure if going north you keeping going to Hamilton and stop at the Hamilton House for some really good food.
