Colorado Motorcycle Roads and Trips

For many motorcycle riders, exploring Colorado (CO) motorcycle roads is the ultimate motorcycle touring dream and perhaps the top most coveted motorcyclist destination in America. Many of America's most breathtaking stretches of the Rocky Mountains are found within this abundantly blessed state. Also, Colorado completely rolls out the red carpet for visitors and so riders will find a large array of amenities to take in when it's time to pull over and get off the bike. Some of the favorite motorcycle ride destinations are Durango, Rocky Mountain National Park, Aspen, and Silverton.

Note: the motorcycle rides below have been divided into two general regions:
          - Northern Colorado (anything north of I-70)
          - Southern Colorado (anything west of I-70)

Peak to Peak Highway (Jul 07)

The Walden Loop (Oct 06)

The Steamboat Scream (Nov 99)

… takes you from one of Colorado's largest and most beautiful mountain lakes to town of Steamboat Springs Colorado ... see some of Colorado's old railways … ends in a series of nice rolling inclines and turns that you can twist the throttle on if you so desire

The Black Canyon Run (May 06)

… spectacular views of the incredible Black Canyon down below … this road is fantastically twisty … 32 miles of turns up and down mountainsides … quite simply the best road in Colorado for riding a motorcycle

… plenty of popular destinations - Little Bear in Evergreen, Evergreen Lake, Conifer with the famous hot-dog stand … views of 14-ers as far as the eye can see … lots of climbs and descents while straight stretches are few and far in between

Read the description below for each of the categories to understand what qualities give a road a strong or weak rating in each of the categories.

A 5 star rating indicates ...
 
A 1 star rating indicates ...

The scenery factor of each route is rated

Far above average scenery for that state. (Ex. mountain views, lakes, rivers, hills, or forests.)   Below average scenery for that state. (Ex. an area that simply is lacking in overall natural beauty.)

The road quality factor of each route is rated

Outstanding driving conditions.  Plenty of twists, turns & hills; well maintained roads with smooth pavement.   Straight roads over flat land or rough road conditions with
some potholes or driving
hazards such as gravel

A rating of what there is to do off the bike

Plenty of things to do when it's time to pull over.  (Ex. museums, restaurants, pull-outs, historical sites, entertainment etc.)    Little to nothing to do when it's time to pull over.  (Ex. lack of museums, restaurants, pull-outs, historical sites, entertainment etc.)
