Title: Brattleboro to Burlington
State: Vermont

Submitted By: KerriOber

Date Submitted: Aug 07

Motorcycle Type: 99 Kaw Vulcan 500

Motorcycle Road Length: 159 Miles

Motorcycle Road Scenery:

You go through some beautiful country, forests, and mountain passes on this route. Except for RT 2, everything is a postcard. Rivers, covered bridges, waterfalls, little towns, mountain views- it's great!

Motorcycle Road Quality:

Roads are in fine shape. This route doesn't go through any twisty mountain passes, but there are inclines, and declines. No traffic to worry about.

Motorcycle Roadside Amenities:

You can't beat this route for places to stop, and enjoy the scenery, or for places to shop and eat. Lots of choices, and plenty of places to gas up, though look for gas stations once you start getting low. There's a few spots where there's a good 20 miles between gas stations. The only not so great part, is Rt 2, which I describe below.

Note: Even though it was August, it was unseasonably cold and windy on our trip. It got down to 40 on Friday night, and maybe skinned 60 on Saturday. Because of that, we skipped the usual pilgrimage to the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Plant, just North of RT2 on 100. If you go up that way, and your lips aren't blue, it's definitely worth a stop.

Directions:

Written directions:

Start in Brattleboro VT, head north out of town on RT 30. Since we were traveling from the Boston Area, and left in the afternoon, we stopped at the Stone Boat Inn, in Jamaica VT. Nice place. Nothing fancy, but clean, quaint rooms, and a nice continental breakfast. Just after Jamaica, we turned North onto RT100. Zowie! What a ride! Gorgeous scenery, and tons of bikes to wave at. In Weston, Vermont, we stopped to visit the famous Vermont Country store, and another general store right in town. Then, we traveled on to Ludlow, and ate lunch at a fantastic BBQ place. Shortly after that, you begin skirting the Green Mountain National Forest, and your definition of beautiful expands just a bit. We rode along this route until it crossed RT 2, and turned onto RT 2 to ride into Burlington. Rt 2 runs along Interstate 89, and was really gusty. Next time we ride up this way, I think we'll stay on 100, until it runs into 15, and take that into Burlington. Burlington is a great place to go to, but it honestly is the most urbane spot in Vermont. There's lots of chain stores, and you'll see more chi-chi folks there than anywhere else in the state.
