Pennsylvania Motorcycle Roads and Trips

The keystone state offers motorcycle riders two federally designated US Scenic Byways, 15 state-designated Byways, and one National Forest Scenic Byway. Pennsylvania (PA) is home to a section of Lake Erie coastline, the incredible Pocono Mountains, rural villages, charming country towns, one of the most famous battlefields in the United States (Gettysburg), and two major cities - Philadelphia & Pittsburg.

Note: the motorcycle rides below have been divided into three general regions:

          - Cross entire Pennsylvania (crosses entire state)
          - Eastern Pennsylvania (anything east of Williamsport)
          - Western Pennsylvania (anything west of Williamsport)

Cross Pennsylvania Motorcycle Rides

Grand Army of the Republic Highway - Route 6 (Aug 04)

… a short visit, a cup of coffee in the diner, a walk in the square, and a chat with passers by to find the proud, hardworking communities that still exist … eat in a 1930's diners, walk on the famous Kinzua Trestle bridge, ride a steam train, descend into a coal mine, and above all, meet a proud people with stories to tell

Eastern Pennsylvania Motorcycle Rides

PA Route 87 (Dec 07)

… road generally follows the bed of the Loyalsock creek ... riding next to shear rock walls, picturesque streams with some rolling hillside farmland mixed-in for good measure

Rivers, Mountains, Old towns. Very nice! … the view from Roadies Restaurant is fantastic … Tannersville is worth a stop if you want to do some shopping - it's the outlet Mecca of the Pocono's

Gold Mine Road to Route 125 (Aug 07)

… a very scenic ride with views of the valleys from mountaintops … an exceptional ride in the fall when the leaves are turning color my favorite is Skeeter's BBQ, located on top of the hill

Dehart dam to Susquehanna River
- the Beautiful Way (Jan 07)

… takes you past the DeHart Dam … later in the trip you'll pass over Peters Mountain and descend down and on to River Road N with hugs the Susquehanna River … take a ride on the quaint Millersburg Ferry … if you are in or near Harrisburg, this is the nicest ride I know of in the area

Delaware Water Gap Loop (Jul 05)

… river scenery, rolling hills, mountains, forest. It has it all! The abandoned town of Wallpack Center has an interesting story behind it - park at the Post Office and check out the Historical Society next door

32 North Along the Delaware River (Jul 04)

… tree lined and run along the beautiful Delaware River … includes some incredible cliffs that add to this superb scenery of this pocket of Pennsylvania … pass through the town of New Hope which is a very interesting town that includes many antiques shops, restaurants, and retail stores … see the actual location where the famous "Crossing of the Delaware" by George Washington took place

Western Pennsylvania Motorcycle Rides

Route 666 - One Hell-of-a-Ride! (Mar 08)

… road's topography makes it a great ride. Every bit of it's 30 miles are covered with banked turns and abrupt, small elevation changes. There's even the "cork screw" downhill turn section about halfway through

PA Route 44 (Dec 07)

.. 70 plus miles of secluded state forest - a nature lovers dream! … won’t have to deal with is stop signs, traffic lights … there are NONE!!!

PA Route 339 (Dec 07)

PA 339 provides some great sweeper action at the top (smooth tarmac), some scenic and twisty rough patches in the middle, followed by much better road conditions and nice tight peg-scraping turns as you descend into Mahanoy City.

Laurel Hills Loop Through the Alleghenies (Aug 99)

… find a classic motorcycle ride and fall in love with this area of … traveling through the Laurel Hills area of the Allegheny Mountains … along this route is a home built by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright that literally hangs over a rushing river ... you can take a tour of the home and actually hear the rushing water below some of the floors of the house

The scenery factor of each route is rated

Far above average scenery for that state. (Ex. mountain views, lakes, rivers, hills, or forests.)   Below average scenery for that state. (Ex. an area that simply is lacking in overall natural beauty.)

The road quality factor of each route is rated

Outstanding driving conditions.  Plenty of twists, turns & hills; well maintained roads with smooth pavement.   Straight roads over flat land or rough road conditions with
some potholes or driving
hazards such as gravel

A rating of what there is to do off the bike

Plenty of things to do when it's time to pull over.  (Ex. museums, restaurants, pull-outs, historical sites, entertainment etc.)    Little to nothing to do when it's time to pull over.  (Ex. lack of museums, restaurants, pull-outs, historical sites, entertainment etc.)
