Title: Route 14: from Horseheads to Watkins Glen
State: New York

Submitted By: Eric Draper

Date Submitted: Jul 05

Motorcycle Type: 81 Honda CB650c

Motorcycle Road Length: 30 Miles

Motorcycle Road Scenery:
Along this lovely little route I traveled the other day, there are many interesting sights to see. Some of these include rivers and marshy areas, waterfalls, a large lake (Seneca Lake), steep rocky cliffs and if you are lucky some wildlife … I saw some deer

Photo contributed by visitor in Jun 09 - "Wagner winery and their Ginny Lee Cafe."
Motorcycle Road Quality:
The path has many twists and turns and only an occasional rough spot. Unfortunately there is some road construction right now (Jul 05) so that is a minus. Over all I greatly enjoyed my ride and think that you will to if you give this one a try.

Motorcycle Roadside Amenities:
This route lies on the way to Watkins Glen State Park. You can fish, swim at the park, camp, and boat if you are with a party that has access to one. Also several restaurants dot the way and once in Watkins Glen you can go to the racetrack.

Directions:
Start your route in the town of Horseheads, NY and simply take Route 14 up to Watkins Glenn, NY … 15 miles one way. Turn around and head back to make it a nice 30 mile roundtrip.

The ride up over the hill between Watkins Glen and Ithaca on route 79 is quite interesting too. You could make a loop out of it by taking route 13 back to Horseheads.

Don't cut your ride short, continue north up Rt 14 along the west shore of Sennaca Lake to the town of Geneva, from there you can take the east side of the lake back to Watkins Glen. There is very nice scenery on both sides of lake.

I have ridden this route many times and it is typically slow to very slow due to traffic.

........and don't stop at Geneva! Keep going on Rt. 14 all the way up to Sodus Point, NY and Lake Ontario. Sodus Point has a nice little village, and there is a lighthouse at Sodus Point, as well. Make the return trip on 414, on the other side of Seneca Lake, back to Watkins Glen. There are some nice little scenic towns along the way, like Seneca Falls.

Heading north on #14 from Horseheads, keep to the speed limit especially in Pine Valley and in Millport (30mph). Midway through the town of Watkins Glen, as a detour, make a right on #414 to Wagner Winery and have lunch at the Ginny Lee Cafe. That ride takes about 20 minutes from WG to Wagner winery. They have wine tasting and a good selection of Beers.
