Title: Galena/Freeport Loop
State: Illinois

Submitted By: Anonymous

Date Submitted: Feb 04

Motorcycle Type: 1989 BMW K100RS

Motorcycle Road Length: 190 Miles
                (Round-trip from Rockford)

Motorcycle Road Scenery:
Go from the prairies to the "mountains" of Illinois while enjoying some really winding roads with great scenery and riding thrills.

Motorcycle Road Quality:
Beginning on Route 20 In Freeport, you move from the gentle hills and prairie to the "mountains" and sweepers around Galena and on the Mississippi, if desired.

Motorcycle Roadside Amenities:
In the town of Galena, you'll find plenty of antique shops, boutiques and fine restaurants along the way and there are other hangouts in Freeport and Dubuque (Iowa). Overall this section of Illinois is a very popular tourist area and will have plenty to offer you.

Directions:

My recommendation for this route is to start in Rockford Illinois which is about 75 miles northwest of Chicago. Take US 20 west out of Rockford all the way to Galena, then on to the Mississippi River and Dubuque Iowa if you want to extend the route a little. When you are ready to return, double back on Route 20 BUT pick up Stagecoach Trail by heading in to Galena by turning north on to Maine Street (in Galena). On this stretch you'll pass by many antique shops and boutiques. At the end of Main Street is a stop sign. Proceed straight through the stop sign about two blocks to Stagecoach Trail. Go right past the foundry, and you are on your way. The restaurants and shopping in Galena are quite popular in Illinois, and it is a real tourist area. The return on Stagecoach Trail is scenic and allows you to beat the traffic that you'll find on route 20. (Note: Following Stagecoach trail is easy, but in case you want to find this route on the map before you head out, keep in mind the following notes -- Stagecoach Trail starts in Galena as Route 3, in Warren it turns in to Route 13 and heads south into Nora and on to Waddams Grove where it turns into Route 6. Stagecoach Trail then runs into US 20 just west of Freeport.)

If you enjoy this ride, please help us keep it nice. There is a 13,000 head factory farm and its 70 acres of manure holding lagoons proposed to be built just West of Stage Coach Trail near Nora,Illinois. The stench and flies with travel for miles. Lets keep this the great ride that it has been for many years. We don't want to have to start riding around with gas masks on....do we? Just go to STOPTHEMEGADAIRY ORG and call or email the Governor and IDOA with the links provided. Thanks!
