Written Directions

This loop will start and finish in Parkersburg, WV. Leave Parkersburg on WV-14 toward Elizabeth. Continue through Elizabeth to the town of Spencer. Go left on U.S.33 for less than a mile. Take a right on U.S.119 and continue for 8/10th mile where you will go left on WV-36. Follow WV-36 for about 30 miles till you come to Interstate 79. Go north on I-79 for 6 miles exiting at WV-16. Follow the signs for WV-16 north, through Grantsville, Smithville, Harrisville, Ellenboro and ending in St.Mary's, WV. Go left on WV-2 in St. Mary's and follow back to Parkersburg.

Scenery

There are some scenic valleys and hill top views along this route. It takes you through several small country towns where everyone seems to enjoy seeing visitors. The last portion of the loop takes you along the Ohio River from St.Mary's most the way to Parkersburg.

Drive Enjoyment

This is a great route for sport and sport touring types. Lots of curves and twisties in the first three quarters of the route. Then lots of straight two lane highway at the end. WV-14 and WV-16 offer some great twists and turns although my favorite is WV-36 from Spencer to I-79. Just plain sweet for the sport rider. Not sure this loop would be great fun on a large touring bike. Have observed many sport bikes on this route. If for some reason you choose not to complete the entire loop there are several bailout options such as WV-47 and U.S.50 which will both take you back to Parkersburg.

Tourism Opportunities

With all the small towns along the way there are numerous restaurants and stops along the way. When you arrive at Harrisville you can detour a short distance and enjoy North Bend State Park.

I rode this loop with three other riders in June, 2012. It was a lovely ride with lots of curves. I would highly recommend it. My only caution would be, keep your tanks topped off, there were long stretches of the route where there was no gas stops or food stops. But I would go back and do it again in a heartbeat.

This, the Spencer to Mineral Wells part, was a pretty fun road. Not too much in the way of ups and downs, but lots of wiggling left and right. It has it's fair share of passing lanes, as well, to get around some of the slower folks. Certainly worth a look, if you're in the area. I have YouTube videos up of the route, one of them was put up in error, but the other is, indeed, WV 14. (The one with the red car is not WV 14.) Check those and many, many more WV roads, as well as OH, PA, MD, VA, TN & NC roads out on my YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/AkumuX
