Written Directions

Old U.S. 195 near Upper Columbia Academy on Spangle Wavery rd. Intersection. Can get there from Mt Hope by turning at cemetery onto Kentuck rd from Valley Chapel rd. South on Kentuck til Liberty High then left on Spangle Waverly approx 15 miles. Or take Hatch rd if on south side Spokane to 195 to Spangle exit and turning right onto Old 195. At starting point head south to Roselia on old highway, once through Plaza the road is peaceful and well maintained. Roseila has one of the first Texaco stations (closed) in area. On south side of town there is the Steptoe battle monument park. Turn left onto Pine City Malden Rd 500 ft or so before the old Milwaukee railroad bridge. There is gravel turnaround 1/4 mile past bridge if wanting closer look of it. The John Wayne Pioneer trail goes across bridge, the Pine City Malden rd crosses the trail just aways out of town but dont think there is parking area there. Rolling Palouse hills to Malden. Malden was almost destroyed by wildfire in September 2020. Malden Pine City rd is nice winding though hills and along Pine Creek. Pine City to state route 23 is normal Palouse views. If hungry or want small community-based attractions St John is to the left less than quarter of a mile. Sprague is 28 miles to the right, the terrain changes from rolling hills to more basalt out cropping. At Ewan can turn north to see southern tip of Rock Lake just short distance. Some nice curves. Continue on 23 once past Ewan (dont blink) Sprague is near 15 miles and the end of this route. One gas station in Sprague, a diner across street and a dispensary next door to that.

Scenery

Rolling Palouse hills to eastern Washington Scab lands with the basalt out croppings. Roselia 502 ft long arched Railroad bridge and Steptoe Battlefield monument both in Roselia. Through the 2020 wild fire destroyed towns of Malden and Pine City.

Drive Enjoyment

The old 195 is in better shape then the new except going north where there are a few patches in pavement near the Spangle Waverly Road. Runs through hills and along side of Pine creek mile or so from northern end of Roselia. T Pine City Malden road is secondary road of decent shape, some elevation changes with curves. State route 23 is great shape has some nice sweepers and tighter also has some WSP movement. Along any of these roads can encounter county so ride your ride.

Tourism Opportunities

Older buildings mostly brick work, small farming communities. Very few small independent grocery stores. Few taverns and eating establishments. Hiking trail along the old Milwaukee rail bed
