Written Directions

Hwy. 87 can be picked up in Timpson Texas. It runs parrallel to the Lousiana State line and runs thru the Sabine National Forest. Great roads with scenery and nice curves. It literally runs down to the Gulf Coast and heads towards Galveston Island. Part of the road along the coast is closed but you can pick it back up at High Island to Port Bolivar and ride the ferry over to Galveston Island and you can pick up 87 there again. You can do this ride in a day and end the day having a drink over the water in Galveston.

Scenery

Typical East Texas scenery thru the piney woods. The lower part of the ride near Beaumont is okay but when you get to the Gulf, the view picks right back up.

Road Quality

The roads we traveled were all in great shape. Nice elevations changes thru the forest and some nice long sweeping curves.

Roadside Amenities

Not many places to eat along the way but Hemphill has the best choices for lunch and since you can be in Galveston by late afternoon, you have your choices of some great places to stay and eat.
