Written Directions

Leave Del Rio on US 90W heading northwest out of town past Amistad Dam to Comstock, Texas. If you have a small tank (2.5-3 gals) you might want to gas up in Comstock. Heading north on Ranch Road 163 there is a minimum of scenery. You will cross over the Devils River bridge, (a good photo op) and then have to ford the Devil's River about five more times as it crosses directly over the road. Ranch Road 163 will fork (take the right fork onto Ranch road 189) which ends at US 277. Then take that back south (right turn to Del Rio).

Scenery

Scenery is not the name of the game when I take this route. It is all about getting out there and blowing the cobwebs out. I sometimes ride this road without ever seeing another vehicle or darn few of them. It's about getting out away from all the everyday hustle and bustle. And in springtime and summer there is a plethora of wildflowers that are a joy to behold. There are a couple of nice curvy sections along the route but it is pretty much smooth straight cruising but spectacular scenery on this ride is practically nonexistent.

Road Quality

The road from Comstock is a narrow two lane road but smooth cruising with a few bumps here and there

Roadside Amenities

Once again, you're taking this to get away from it all so naturally there are not really any amenities to take advantage of. There is gas and fair restaurants in Comstock. And gas, (Regular only) in Loma Alta on US-277.

Comment: I recently did this ride and found a sweet addition to it. I wanted to go to the Caverns of Sonora on my way back to Lubbock., so i took CR410 north from 189. It's paved the entire way, although you cross several cattle guards and must weave through fresh cow patties in places. It follows the Devil River and crosses it several times, It turns into 1989 at the caverns and runs into I10 west of Sonora.
