Written Directions

The route starts in Mckinney at the intersection of 75 and 380. Go east on 380 and turn left on to W New Hope Road (1827). In Altoga go straight thru a 4-way onto 470 (do not turn left). From 470 turn left onto 1377 at the stop sign. From 1377, turn right onto 545 and go into Blue Ridge. In Blue Ridge, turn left at the stop sign onto Bus 78 and then after 1/2 mile, turn right onto 981 just before the cemetery. Follow 981 until it turns into 1562 to Celeste. Turn right onto 69 in Celeste and just as you come out of town turn left onto 272 (just before the Audie Murphy marker on the right). Follow 272 to Hickory Creek (a crossroads with a couple of houses), turn right onto 816 East at the four way intersection. Follow 816 into Wolf City and in the center of town turn left onto 34 at the light. From 34 turn left onto 217 toward Bonham. 271 takes you all the way to Bonham State Park. In Gober, be sure to turn right just before the historical marker sign to stay on 217. From Bonham State Park you can go onto Bonham .

Scenery

On this road you will see rural Texas country homes, ranches and farmland. Highway 271 yields expansive views from atop a ridge line. Celeste has an historical marker for Audie Murphy just past the corner of 69 and 272. Bonham State Park is a beautiful and a scenic place to picnic. Notes: This is my favorite route to get away from hectic city life and relax. Road 470 is a little tree lined road worth the extra complication. Be careful in Wolfe City - they have more cops than residents. For an extra stop with Texas prairie scenery, stop at Parkhill Prairie, 2 miles south of highway 981 on CR 669 and 668 just before Lane, Texas.

Road Quality

For being as flat as it is, Texas has some of the best twists and turns. There are sweepers, sharp 90 degree corners, and blind decreasing radius S curves on this route.

Roadside Amenities

Blue Ridge has the Cattleman's Cafe on the square. Celeste has gas but after that it's very rural. Wolfe City has a gas station and a small cafe. Bonham has all the usual amenities.

Comment: The intersection of 34 and 271 past Wolfe City is marked 68 - you don't see a 271 sign for three miles along that road. (My GPS indicated that it was 68/271 if I went to a higher-resolution setting, but not at the inch-to-two-mile setting I usually prefer. Early stretches of 271 are also a little coarse and uneven due to recent patchwork, but not unsettling, even on a 900+ lb. motorcycle.

Comment: My friends and I ride a route similar to this. Since we live in Greenville, we take 69 up to 272 in Celeste, continue North on 816 to Bailey, then take the long straight 78 to Leonard where we catch 272 cutting back across just on the outside of town. Running this loop is a blast! The traffic is low, the twisties intense and the ride is amazing!

Comment: I live in this part of the country and you screw up if you don't go through Leonard and have lunch at LEA'S. They have a great buffet with real Texas home cooked chicken fried steak like grandma used to make. Then go to the right on 69 toward Greenville and take the 1st left past the Dollar Store/Sonic back to Wolfe City. Enjoy the twisties!
