Written Directions

This route runs along Hwy 16 from Charlotte up to Wilkesboro, NC. Follow the signs but avoid the business route - though it does take you through some quaint small towns with some really cool old homes.

Scenery

Wilkesboro says that it's the gateway to the mountains and if you take this ride, you'll see why. As you top the hills, the views are breathtaking as they overlook the Blue Ridge mountains.

Road Quality

For the most part the roads are excellent. A bit of bumpy stuff around the little towns. Well marked for those not too familiar with the area.

Roadside Amenities

Gas is available as you need it. Restaurants are available and I highly recommend a little family owned place called "the Triple Play" ... just north of Taylorsville. Highly recommend the burgers or hamburger steak. Secret recipe with a bit of a kick. It's a must! Homemade pie too! OVERALL EXCELLENT!

Comment: Good ride. I added 421 to the Blue Ridge Parkway into Blowing Rock, where I stopped at Tucker's Cafe. Then 321 south into Lenoir and 90 across to Taylorsville where I picked up 16 again and went back to Charlotte. About 260 miles total and a good ride!!!

Comment: This route is nothing but typical 2 lane town to town w/ a lot of traffic until you get north of Taylorsville...Save your time and take I-77 north to I-40 west to exit 148, hwy 64 west to Taylorsville. Then get on 16 north...You will then cross the Brushy Mtns. through the apple orchards...Continuing on north of N. Wilkesboro is when the ride really gets good...16 continues to Virginia and right near the state line is Shatley Springs...This stop is a must if you like really good country cookin' (Just like momma's).

Comment: Best part of this road is north of Wilkesboro in my opinion. Outside of Wilkes it connects to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the ride to the parkway has a few nice twists on it. And the Triple Play is no longer is business. This road has a lot of traffic from Charlotte but is a good alternative to riding 4 lanes up.

Comment: We took the Rte16N ride from Charlotte to Wilksboro. Nice ride with views of the countryside. Stopped and had lunch at The Triple Play , as small family owned place that is spotless. Nice friendly people and the food was great. Had the triple play burger! And the homemade Boston creme pie was the best! The ride was great and there was little traffic on the road. We did the ride on a Saturday. I will do this ride again some time.
