Motorcycle Road Length: 50 Miles

Written Directions

You need to start in Highlands, NC. From their take Highway 28 north-northwest toward Franklin.

Scenery

On this route you will go through Nantahala Gorge with a view of the waterfall from the top of the road. Near the gorge is the Dry Fall waterfall, which you can actually drive behind the fall. You will drive along Fontana Lake (which borders the Great Smokey Mountain National Park) and end up at Deal's Gap.

Road Quality

This road is Highway 28 starting in Highland and ending at Deal's Gap. The road has lots of twists, sharp curves, but it is fairly level all the way through. If you haven't been on this route you need to try it. The views are beautiful and the road is never straight. The road is very smooth, so you'll ride with ease.

Roadside Amenities

There are pull off spots all along this route, even in the area along the river. You can take a swim to cool off during the hot day. You won't find many gas stations, shops, or restaurants along this route, so you need to stop at the towns that are on this route. You will ride through Highland, Franklin, Lauada and Fontana Village.

Comment: Dry Falls is currently closed June '08. But, Bridal Veil Falls is always open just a couple miles south of Dry Falls. Go east on 28 to Sapphire to Whitewater Falls, follow signs.
