Written Directions

This route is very easy to find and follow. Start your route in the town of Ely, MN and simply head south on Hwy 1 all the way to the route's end point of Illgen City, MN.

Scenery

This is Northern Minnesota at its finest! Entire length of run is within the Superior National Forest. You'll see most of the best scenery at the end of the route once you reach the north shore of Lake Superior.

Road Quality

Smooth blacktop for entire run, good twisties ... just watch out for the autos and most corners are heavily wooded and no way to see what is ahead of you.

Roadside Amenities

Nothing around ... just you and nature. For something to do just head south. Once you hit Illgen, you will slowly get back to civilization.

Comment: Beautiful road. This is a road for full apparel. Even being cautious and knowing the road, anything happens to the bike and your off the road and in the ditch. The wife and I are the only ones that the first responders ever saw walk away from a crash in this area. Not an area to take for granted.

Comment: Best ride in Northern Minnesota. Very scenic. The northern half is more exciting by far with tight blind corners. Road conditions are awesome, just be sure to stop in Ely for food, bathrooms and fuel. Not much else until the North Shore.

Comment: This is definitely one of the best motorcycle roads in Minnesota, as long as you are cautious. There are about five billion moose and deer up by Ely, coupled with blind corners and the urge to go 'faster' this can get hairy. The road straightening is complete, it was only a couple of the scary sections (no shoulder, blind corners, tree branches that you can touch as you go by).

Comment: This road is great!! I took this as a detour to Duluth from Roseau a few weeks ago. The ride through the woods is great and the curves are like a mountain road. Best road in Minnesota by far.

Comment: We took this route on our 2008 Lake Superior Circle Tour. A slight bit out of the way of the Circle Tour if your coming from Wis. but it is well worth the detour! Not a lot of gear shifting, just a lot of bends and curves. It was by far the best winding road I have ever been on for that distance.
