Motorcycle Road Length: 9 Miles
Written Directions
From the South end, the route is easy to find as it starts in Wolcott, KS which is just outside the north west corner of I-435 (the freeway that that loops around Kansas City, KS). If you're trying to get to Wolcott from Kansas City just find where I-70 and I-435 intersect (on the Kansas side)and go North on I-435 to the State Route 5 (AKA K-5) exit (exit #18) which will put you in Wolcott, KS. Then proceed North on State Route 5 (AKA K-5). The first miles is in the river bottom and straight as an arrow then the fun begins! You find the North end of this route by taking US 73 hwy south out of Leavenworth, KS until you see the large Ford dealership at the corner of US 73 and Kansas State Route 5 (K-5). Proceed East and within 1/2 mile the fun begins!
Scenery

There are trees overhanging the entire route which makes you feel like you are riding on a closed course ... you really don't have time to look at the Scenery as you are way too busy just enjoying the ride.
Road Quality

The road surface is in excellent condition and the corners are all well marked ranging from 25 MPH to 40 MPH. The entire route is nothing but twisties and small hills. It will really get and keep your attention!
Roadside Amenities

The only thing along the way is Lakeside Speedway at the far Eastern end of the route and it is only open on Fridays in the Summer.

| Comment: I rode this ride this weekend after reading this site. All the hills kept the wind at bay. I agree this is a great curvy little road. I want to add what everyone else said and be cautious. Some jerk off in a truck decided he needed both lane when going around a curve. It wouldn't have been as bad but I had my wife on the back. I gave him a nice salute with one of my fingers. I asked my dad about the highway and he said that there has been a share of wrecks on it. So my 3 tips are watch your speed, watch the road, and watch for idiots. | ||

| Comment: Very nice ride considering where we live. One word of caution -- when traveling north on this road, there is a sign on a hill warning of a stop ahead. Trust me, there is a stop ahead just as you top the next hill, and it's immediate. Another interesting feature of this road -- if you stay on it all the way to Lansing/Leavenworth, you'll pass between the Kansas state prisons, mens and womens I believe, and you'll pass by the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Pretty impressive. | ||

| Comment: I just stumbled on this route on the same day I discovered this web site. Both are great finds and during the end of October the colors were awesome to see. I will be doing this one again soon | ||

| Comment: This road is a slice of heaven! You need to be aware of changing conditions (dirt, gravel, etc.) and keep your speed reasonable as you do pass a number of small farms, but even then, this line-up of twisties is a joy! I too continue beyond I-435 and enjoy a few more twists and turns before emerging near the dog race track. Also try Mission Road south of 151st if in the SE side of Kansas City! | ||

| Comment: What the others said, but ... BE CAUTIOUS! This can be a deadly piece of road for motorcyclists. Almost every riding season some rider buys the farm on this road. Pay close attention to the advisory speeds on the curves, and watch out for loose gravel--there are several intersecting gravel driveways that spew out loose gravel as a trap for riders. But don't let this keep you away, it really is a fun road to ride! | ||

| Comment: This is our little corner of heaven in Kansas. Seems like everytime we leave home (Leavenworth, KS) we take 5 Highway to get where we are going. It is a beautiful ride!!! | ||

| Comment: we ride highway 5 all the time! when taking Hwy 5 south, we pass by the I-435 crossing and keep going on the county road (rather than get on the interstate) and it turns into 98th street, then 97th street, and comes out on Leavenworth Rd (Hwy 5) near the Wyandot County Park entrance. | ||
