Easy access to I-70 lies nine miles south of Manhattan.

Scenery

In the heart of the Flint Hills and in the last remnants of the Tall grass Prairie drivers can expect green rolling hills as far as the horizon, occasional rocky stream beds, and historic rural America.

Road Quality

The 2-lane road was resurfaced in '03/'04 from Manhattan to Council Grove and is excellent, from Council Grove to Cassoday the road is still good. The entire length contains gentle curves overall through high plains, hillside breaks, and lowland floodplains. Convenience stations are available in Manhattan, Council Grove, Cottonwood Falls, and Cassoday.

Roadside Amenities

Camp at Corps of Engineers campgrounds along Council Grove Lake, Stay at the Cottage House Bed and Breakfast in Council Grove, day hike at the National Park Services' Tall Grass National Prairie, or enjoy the history of the Santa Fe Trail in Cottonwood Falls! Travel during the Spring to catch the green blooming prairie during the day or the glowing beauty of the prairie fires at night.

Comment: The first Sunday of each month during riding season, thousands of motorcycles converge on Cassoday (population 100). You can see just about any kind of bike imaginable. It is like Sturgis for a day (only there is no beer or topless women). Everybody is gone again by mid to late afternoon. If you get a chance you have to see it.
