Written Directions

The route starts north of Alma in Rudy, AR on Hwy 71. Just take and stay on Hwy 71 heading north all the way up to just south of Fayetteville.

Scenery

This route used to be the only link to north west Arkansas. It offers impressive mountain vistas. Along the way are small mountain towns, roadside farms, antique and other shops. At Winslow your can take a detour over to Devil's Den by heading west of Rt 74. The route was once an old stage coach line and has some impress small towns like Mountainburg, Winslow, and West Fork. Mount Gaylor I believe to be the highest point with an old watch town sitting along side the highway. This used to be one of the highlights of Hwy 71 till I-540 took most of the traffic.

Road Quality

The route rises and falls with the mountain landscape and includes a healthy collection of twists and turns any biker would enjoy. If you choose to detour over to Devil's Den you will experience some of the best twist backs around.

Roadside Amenities

There are small towns along the way that offer old style Diary Bar service like Mountainburg. If you take the detour to Devil's Den State Park you will really enjoy the scenery and the amenities of the park.

Comment: Oct. 16, 2010. Rode from Windingstair Mountain to Devils Den to Alma and back again. 317 miles day trip. Awesome ride but stay off of Arkansas State Hwy 220. It's a friggin' dirt, gravel and rock road.

Comment: We had a very hot ride 8/10/10. Arkansas was in the midst of triple-digit heat and our travel plans did not allow us to ride only in the cool of the morning. However, that part was on us: so be it! I wanted to comment here in order to alert riders to construction going on along this route. There were flagmen and stop and go traffic over two bridges as well as construction on other parts of the road. We weren't delayed long, and it didn't interfere with our view of the landscape, but the construction looked like it will be there for awhile. There are fun twisty turns and changes in elevation, so watch for the construction but have fun!

Comment: This road is absolutely great. I've ridden this thing since before they came along with the Interstste. It is trageic what happen to the souviner shops along the way. Great road to ride especially in the morning time, as i live very close to this route I can't get enough. After you go across the more hilly section of this road is a little known road 77 that is full of farms and scenic beauty also. Along the way, heading west, on the right is a sping that was used and still is for people to get some of the drinking water. Some of the purest water there is. The fall is the best time by far to ride 71 to take in the beauty of the turning leaves. Wow, what a site.
