Motorcycle Road Length: 90 Miles

Written Directions

You can't miss this as there is no confusion. From Phoenix take Rt.60 east out of the big city toward Superior. At Superior turn south on Rt.177 toward Winkleman. At Winkleman turn left (north) on Rt.77 toward Globe. At Globe turn west on Rt. 60 (left into town and follow traffic on Rt.60 across the bridge, turn right and then follow traffic toward Miami (Az) and on over the "Top of Land" to Superior. You're back at start. From Tucson you will enter the triangle at Winkleman. From Showlow you will enter at Globe. I love this 90 mile ride for all the scenery and wonderful historical feeling. Take your time, this is a slice of life not to be misssed.

Scenery

The route changes elevation from 2500 to 5000 feet with corresponding changes in flora and geology. It is beautiful, different on each of 3 sides.

Road Quality

These are state high ways and all maintained very well.

Roadside Amenities

If you eat Mexican food you are in luck. I absolutely recommend Marias in Winkleman, order tacos w rice and beans. In Superior eat at Las Hermanos. In Globe there are several choices, you might even get a hamburger or hot dog someplace. Be sure to eat at one of the shacks. The food is excellent. Tour a little in Superior and be sure to ride though downtown Globe. You will be impressed with the substantial building in Globe. The old mines, mining towns and geology are incredible. El Capitan Pass between Winkleman and Globe is a sure stop to enjoy the views. Life is short, do it now.

Comment: This is a nice loop through some beautiful desert-mountain country. The section between Superior and Globe can get bogged down with weekend traffic but the two other legs more than compensate for it. The road surface is generally in good shape with lots of "S" curves, no switchbacks and a decent amount of few undulation sections on the Winkleman/Superior leg.

Comment: What a great ride! We rode the route Nov 2011. Variety in geography, evev saw the fall leaves rainbow of colors on part of the route. Interesting to see the changes in the geography of the mountains due to volcano and seismic activity. Be sure and stop in Globe at the Cafe on the hill at the intersection of 60 and 188 for a cinnamon bun smothered in butter. what a treat!

Comment: Great afternoon ride. I sometimes go west from Globe past Roosevelt Lake to Punkin Center, then home on Beeline Highway. Fantastic views of the lake from the highway, but few if any spots to stop. Longer trip, but that's what it's all about isn't it? Time in the saddle.

Comment: I try to do this ride at least once a year. It is a good one in late fall though early spring when it is still to cold to head up into the mountains but it is to nice in the valley to be stuck in town. If you normally ride in the desert in the summer it is a fine run as well if you get an early start and plan on spending some time relaxing along the way so as not to get back into town when it is to hot in the middle of the day. A good little side trip is over to Coolidge Dam, which is not to far out of Globe.
